Getting started

Notion AI is built into your Notion workspace, so you first need an account at notion.com. On any page, type "/" or select text and click the AI icon to access the features: write, summarize, translate or improve what you've already written. The most powerful feature is Q&A: from the Home tab, type a question in natural language ("what did we decide about the Q2 roadmap?") and Notion AI searches all your pages to give you an answer with cited sources. You don't need to configure anything to start using AI writing; Q&A works better the more content you already have organized in your workspace.

Questions about your own workspace
Ask anything about past decisions, notes or documents and get an answer with the exact pages where it was mentioned.
Summarize meetings and long documents
Paste meeting notes or a lengthy document and ask for a summary with the key points and the resulting tasks.
Write and improve text
Generate drafts of emails, reports or posts directly inside the page where you'll use them.
Find information spread across multiple apps
With Connectors, ask a question and Notion AI also searches Slack, Google Drive, GitHub or Jira, citing where each piece of information came from.

Advanced setup

  1. Enable Connectors
    You must be the workspace owner and have admin permissions in the external app. Go to the Notion AI settings and connect Slack, Google Drive, GitHub, Jira, Teams, SharePoint or OneDrive. The first indexing can take up to 72 hours.
  2. Add context to a search
    In the Enterprise Search window, use "Add context" to specify particular pages, people or teamspaces that Notion AI should take into account when answering, or @-mention a specific page directly in your question.
  3. Permissions and security
    Notion AI respects existing permissions: you will never get answers based on content you don't have access to, even if it is indexed in the workspace.

Tips

  • Be specific about the type of document in your search questions: "search the engineering wiki..." works better than a generic question.
  • For questions about a specific Slack thread, paste the direct link to the conversation into your question instead of describing it from memory.
  • Use Q&A before creating a new page from scratch: the information probably already exists somewhere in your workspace.
  • Keep your pages and databases well organized: Q&A and Connectors depend on content being indexed and findable; they can't read your mind.
  • Combine AI writing with databases: ask the AI to automatically summarize new entries in a shared database.

FAQ

Does Notion AI cost extra?
It's a paid add-on on top of a Notion plan, at an additional cost of roughly $10/month per user, although some basic AI features are included in a limited form on certain plans.
Can it see files I don't have access to?
No. Notion AI strictly respects the existing permissions of the workspace and of connected apps.
How long do Connectors take to index a new app?
It can take up to 72 hours, depending on the volume of content in the app you connect.
Does it work on Notion's free plan?
Notion's free plan includes very limited AI use; for ongoing use (Q&A, Connectors) you normally need the paid add-on.
