Getting started

Go to notebooklm.google.com with your Google account; the Standard plan is free and requires no card. Create a new notebook and upload your sources (PDFs, web links, Google Drive documents, audio, or video). NotebookLM analyzes the content and lets you chat with it, generate summaries, mind maps, data tables, or a conversational podcast-style audio summary, always citing the exact source passage that backs each claim.

Advanced setup

  1. Organize sources by notebook
    Create a separate notebook for each project or subject so context doesn't mix between different topics.
  2. Generate custom personas
    Since January 2026, you can define custom personas or tones for the assistant's responses within a notebook.
  3. Export to presentations
    Use the slide review and PPTX export feature (added in February 2026) to turn the analyzed content into an editable presentation.
  4. Choose the right plan
    If you need more than 300 sources per notebook or frequent daily Deep Research reports, consider upgrading to Pro or Ultra based on your usage volume.

Tips

  • Upload high-quality, well-organized sources: the noisier your documents, the less precise the generated summary will be.
  • Use the podcast-style audio summary to review dense content during commutes or manual tasks, instead of rereading everything.
  • Take advantage of the 1-million-token context window (added in October 2025) for notebooks with a huge number of sources without losing coherence.
  • Before citing any data in serious work, verify the exact citation NotebookLM provides against the original document.

Does NotebookLM make up information that isn't in my sources?
It's designed to answer only with what appears in the uploaded sources, citing the exact passage, which greatly reduces hallucinations compared to a generic chatbot.
