Getting started

Midjourney works through Discord (although it also offers its own web app). Join the official Discord server or use midjourney.com with your account, and in any generation channel type /imagine followed by a description of the image you want to create. The bot will generate 4 variations in a few seconds. You can request more variations of one of them, upscale it to high resolution, or edit it with Vary Region to retouch only one area. No prior setup is needed: the more descriptive and visual your prompt is (style, lighting, composition, camera), the better the result.

1. Basic commands
   /imagine generates an image from your description. /describe does the opposite: upload an image and you get 4 sample prompts that would describe it. /blend combines two images into a new composition.
2. Image parameters
   They are added at the end of the prompt with a double dash, with no commas before them. The most commonly used: --ar (aspect ratio, e.g. --ar 16:9), --v (model version, e.g. --v 6) and --niji (for anime style).
3. Speed modes
   --fast prioritizes speed, --relax generates without limit but more slowly (depending on your plan), and --turbo gives maximum generation priority for eligible plans.
4. Saved preferences
   /prefer option lets you save parameter combinations you use often, so you don't have to type them every time; /prefer option list shows them all.

Tips

• Be very descriptive about the visual style ("studio photography, soft side lighting, 50mm") instead of just describing the object: Midjourney responds much better to concrete visual language.
• Use --ar to set the aspect ratio before generating, rather than cropping afterward: you get better composition.
• If you like one of the 4 variations but want small changes, use Vary (Subtle) instead of regenerating the whole prompt.
• Save your favorite prompts in a separate document: they're reusable and save a lot of trial and error.
• For legible text inside the image, Midjourney is not the best option: consider Ideogram for those cases.
